Dr. Sherry L. Daniels
Senior/Lead Pastor
Daniels is a graduate of Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Ga. where she received the M.Div. degree, and Drew School of Theology in Madison, NJ where she completed a D.Min. in Urban Ministries and Urbanization. Daniels graduated with “distinction” in her class of thirty—with Drew University noting that her final dissertation/project was completed in publishable form. Ordained a deacon in 1990 and elder in 1992 in the Texas Annual Conference, Daniels is entering year 34 of ministerial leadership in various capacities in the United Methodist Denomination.
Daniels served in theTexas Conference as Campus Minister of Texas Southern University Wesley Foundation, Associate Director of Teaching Education on Conference Staff, and Senior Pastor of Cornerstone UMC. This appointment was the first appointment of an African American Female Senior Pastor of a major, majority congregation in the Texas Conference with a membership of over 1000 members and average worship attendance exceeding 460 per week before her departure to serve on the Bishop's Cabinet in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference. Daniels served for three years as the director of Congregational Development before moving to Norfolk, VA to serve Norfolk UMC. “One of my great passions in ministry is having the opportunity to work with clergy and laity as they respond to their ‘call’ of ministry for their community.
Having the opportunity to give leadership to the creation of the Shalom Zone Ministry Initiative in the Texas Conference helped me to appreciate God's unique calling to local congregations. Daniels facilitated the team building for the creation of its Board in the Conference and the hiring of its first full-time Executive Director and staff members. Moreover, the Texas Shalom Initiative grew from four local sites to a mobile clinic (van) in partnership with the Methodist Hospital in Houston to an eighteen-wheeler mobile clinic serving marginalized communities.
God has provided all of us with tremendous spiritual gifts and I am convinced that when we trust God and use our gifts faithfully, we will make a difference where we serve." For Daniels, the cutting edge in helping churches of all sizes embraces the use of technology in ministry. Since March of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, this prioritized use of affordable technology has resulted in not one Sunday Worship Experience being missed and the coordinated effort to keep the congregation connected and engaged.
In her current appointment, she is serving as the senior/lead pastor of Norfolk United Methodist Church since July 2006.
